Anne Curtis’ Guide to Summer Travel Essentials

You’ve filed for leave, booked your tickets, reserved the hotel and mapped out your itinerary. Perhaps the only thing you have to do now is pack—arguably the most stressful thing you have to do before you go off your much-awaited summer jaunt.

So take your cue from Anne Curtis, Brand Ambassador of American Tourister Philippines, whose busy lifestyle, wanderlust and love for the season has narrowed it down to the most useful travel must-haves for the season. Between jetting off to Australia to spend time with family, wanting to explore Hamilton Island or the Northern Territory or even checking off Nepal this year on her summer go-to list, here are some of her summer travel essentials.

Sunnies

What would summer be without a nice pair of sunglasses? Whether you’re sunbathing on a sunny coast or touring exotic new locales, nothing says relaxed sophistication than a sun-drenched photo of yourself sporting your favorite pair.

Sunblock

It’s summer after all—so expect the rays to beat down. Be sure to slap on a lot of sunblock to protect yourself as you lounge by the shore or walk the streets of a new a city.

The throw-on dress

Pack one of the most versatile pieces you can possibly bring on any trip—a simple, airy shift dress can be work with comfortable flip-flops or sandals for a leisurely stroll, over swimwear as a cover-up or if accessorized right, becomes a simple, night-out look.

The all-around clutch

Pack your daily essentials into a roomy clutch that can carry your passport, tickets, wallet, cellphone and all your other must-have travel essentials that you want easy access to. Not only will you know where to find everything as you rummage through your carry-all, it can double as a handy little clutch for nights out.

Your cellphone

It has a camera, first of all—so you can easily take memorable snaps from your trip for posterity and doubles as an entertainment source for all your favorite films and music. On a more practical note, it helps to have your phone with you (even when on vacation) just to make sure that you can communicate in the event of an emergency.

A good book

It’s a great way to pass the time while waiting for flights and it’s an absolute essential as you try to soak in the seaside rays.

Your favorite swimwear

The great thing about this season is the sheer variety of swimwear options that you have at your fingertips. A bikini, a one-piece, a tankini, rashguards, board shorts, you name it. They’re pretty lightweight so you can easily pack as many as you want.

Your dependable luggage

Speaking of packing, you’ll need a trusty, dependable yet fashionable suitcase that’s sturdy enough to withstand even the longest of flights and keep your precious travel essentials tucked neatly (and safely)  away until they’re ready for use. Choose one in a lively, bright hue, like the limited edition HS MV+ Landmark Prints line from American Tourister, which is available in fun, candy colors, to make it easily recognizable as it emerges from the baggage carousel. And when it comes to the most convenient soft case options, Gelato goes easily on the overhead compartments or as conveniently checked-in while  the Buzz backpack line and Jiffy Duffle line comes in stylish, understated hues perfect for sightseeing.

For Anne, American Tourister has always been her go-to pick for all her travel needs—a brand that has been trusted through the years by travellers for its dependability and exceptional style and allows her to check off one less thing on her travel to-do list.

As for Anne’s perfect summer day?

“Lying down on a beautiful beach, getting a tan and reading an awesome book and just eating ice cream,” she shares.

And if you keep her summer travel essentials in mind as you pack for your perfect summer day, all you have to worry about now is choosing your ice cream flavor and finding that perfect Instagram filter to capture the moment.

Available in American Tourister Retail Stores and in leading Landmark, Robinsons, Rustan’s, Metro Gaisano and SM Department Stores nationwide. Follow us on Facebook: AmericanTouristerPh | Instagram: @americantouristerph | Twitter: @amertouristerph

Magsaysay Child Care Center: Summer Activities

One of our benefits in our company is Magsaysay Child Care Center. Our top management greatly values family time and development of the Magsaysay children. Our child care center also houses the breastfeeding station for all nursing moms in all Magsaysay companies.

My two kids are really having fun while learning at the child care center. They are always showing interest to go with me and go to their "work" at the child care center. This summer, several activities are lined-up for them.

Last week, Kuya and Claire enjoyed preparing simple snacks. Each child is given an opportunity to experience mixing, stirring, crashing the ingredients and of course...eating!

Thank you Magsaysay :)

Gotcha Claire!

DIY: Party Decors

When my kids turned one, this blog is not yet existing. I was not able to get close up photos of the DIY party decors I made for my kids.

1) For my son: table centerpiece
Materials: cleaned empty cans, styrofoam, BBQ sticks, Japanese papers, construction papers, adhesive tape, and of course the photos of my son for the first 12 months.

2) For my daughter: somewhat fan decors (I don't know how to call it)
Materials: colored papers, printed hello kitty characters and photos of my daughter during her first year

These decors served as wall and hanging decors.

The photos of my kids served also as take-aways of our guests. I made sure to include pictures of my kids with our friends and relatives so that they can bring home their photos with my kids - during baptismal, events and everyday activities.

For their next party, which would probably years from now, I will make sure to document my DIY party projects :)

DIY: Happy Birthday Greetings

I love DIY projects. This is my outlet to unleash my creativity. Actually, my office mates tease me that I am also an art teacher :)

Last January, my son turned four. I forgot to print him something that we can post on our wall. We wanted to surprise him. A night before his birthday, I recalled the letter cutting my Arts teacher taught us. Took the effort in folding and cutting a simple message to my son. Got some leftover green papers I used when I made birthday decors for my daughter's first birthday last year. Voila! "Kiko's 4th Bday."

Last week, my daughter turned two. Again, same scenario happened. I forgot to print the birthday greetings. And again, a night before her birthday, got small cut out card boards I used for the letters I made for Kuya, made a quick lettering and made a colorful birthday greeting. My daughter actually volunteered to put up the last two letters. She was proud to help.

I love doing simple things for my kids. It keeps me young at heart :)

Little Help from Kuya

My mother was craving for ginataang halo-halo. When I started forming the glutinous rice, my son said, "Nanay, parang clay."

I asked him if he would like to help me and he said, "Opo."

I got a little help from my son. He enjoyed forming the bilo-bilo.

Thank you Kuya for helping!

Inspiring talk by world renowned humanitarian Sri Sri Ravi Shankar on secrets to inner strength and happiness

He travels to nearly 40 countries a year and has started programs and organizations that have touched the lives of over 300 million people in over 150 countries and on the 8th of April 2015, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, one of the world’s icons for human values and peace, will be visiting the Philippines, to inspire the public for one night only with his globally recognized wisdom.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar believes that a peaceful society starts with the peaceful mind of every individual. He started organizations such as “The Art of Living Foundation” to share best practice techniques and ancient Wisdom to help people from all over the world manage their mind and negative emotions - thereby helping them lead healthier and happier lives.

The Art of Living's programs include breathing techniques, Yoga, Meditation and simple yet profound life guiding principles. The core technique known as the Sudarshan Kriya, is a powerful and revitalizing breathing technique scientifically proven to be beneficial for the mind and body. Art of Living’s global website, http://www.artofliving.org, states that “Sudarshan Kriya incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath which harmonize the body, mind and emotions,” It has been proven to be very effective in managing stress, fatigue and negative emotions such as anger, frustration and depression.

Founded in 1981, Art of Living Foundation – is now one of the largest international volunteer-based, non-profit, educational, charitable and humanitarian organizations having a special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

In the Philippines, the Art of Living has conducted numerous courses and workshops. In 2009, Bienvenido “Donnie” Tantoco, President of Rustan’s Supercenters Inc., was quoted saying, “Once you know proper breathing, it is effortless to be in the present moment. I’m calmer, my mind is more lucid. Basically, I don’t feel so stressed and I have been sleeping better now than I have in years.”

The Art of Living  programs benefit all sectors of society – people from all backgrounds and all walks of life have enjoyed the various courses and techniques offered by the foundation. Apart from addressing the stress and negative emotions of the general public, Art of Living also includes

poverty alleviation, women empowerment, environmental sustainability and conflict resolution in their mission.

In the Philippines, the service arm of the Art of Living deploys volunteers and teachers to conduct workshops free of charge to various sectors of society. One such workshop, BeST (Breath & Sound Therapy) is for marginalized, depressed or traumatized people and communities including victims of calamities in the wake of Typhoon Yolanda and Ondoy. The BeST program is effective regardless of the number of participants, making it recognized by other NGO’s as an effective psychosocial remedy to address deep trauma in large communities where one-on-one sessions are impractical and costly.

BeST has been conducted throughout the Philippines from Metro Manila, through Visayas and Mindanao working occasionally with other NGO’s such as the Red Cross and Save the Children. The Service arm has also conducted regular workshops for prisoner rehabilitation in Bilibid Prison, Muntinlupa City as well as Makati City Jail – over 1000 inmates have been through the program till date.

In light of the recent violence and tragedies that have befallen the nation, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s visit complements the national and global call for peace and harmony. “Difficult and unpleasant times come in everyone’s life,” he says, “What is important is to keep the faith intact. On a completely dark night, even a flickering lamp can help you find the way.”

Sri Sri’s visit to Manila marks the end of his Asian Tour where he is expected to inspire thousands of people across Cambodia, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia.

Colorectal Cancer: What we need to know about it.

Early diagnosis is the first step to prevention. :-)

Do you experience diarrhea or constipation that lasts for days, abdominal pain and rectal bleeding? Get yourself screened for bowel cancer. Also known as colorectal cancer, it is a malignant tumor that develops in the lining of the large intestine and can spread to nearby organs or to glands called lymph nodes.

"Bowel cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the Philippines but it is highly preventable and treatable when diagnosed early. Filipinos should have sufficient information of the disease to know how it can be prevented or managed," says Dr. Nicky Montoya, president of Medicard Philippines.

Here are the essential facts about bowel cancer:

It can be colon cancer or rectal cancer.
Bowel cancer can start in the colon (colon cancer) or in the rectum, which is the last 12 centimeters of the large intestine (rectal cancer). The difference in location requires different methids of treatments.

It usally starts as polyps.
Most bowel cancer cells start as polyps, which are abnormal growths in the inner lining of the colon and rectum. Polyps are not malignant except for one type called adenoma, which becomes cancerous over time and multiplies to form a tumor.

Its risk increases with age.
Polyps normally appear as people get older and adenoma develops into cancerous cells in about 10 years. This explains why majority of those who are diagnosed with bowel cancer are 50 years old and above. The disease can also develop in younger people although it occurs much less frequently.

It can be triggered by poor diet and an unhealthy lifestyle.
"Bad food" and lack of exercise can build up toxins in the colon. Studies link bowel cancer a diet that's low in fiber and high in fat and calories. Cigarette smokers, heavy alcohol drinkers, obese people, and those who have sedentary lifestyles are also prone to developing the disease.

Its crucial symptoms are changes in the bowel habit.
Sings of bowel cancer include prolonged diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, vomiting, rectal bleeding, bloating, and a relentless feeling of moving your bowels even when you've just finished doing so. You may aslo see blood in your stool. Physically, you may experience weakness, fatigue and rapid weight loss.

It is 90 percent curable when diagnosed early.
Bowel cancer may not cause any symptoms during its early stage, which underlies the importance of regular colorectal cancer screenings and tests including colonoscopy, CT colonography, flexible sigmoidoscopy, double-contrast barium enema (DCBE), Guaiac-based fecal occult blood test, fecal immunochemical test (FIT), stool DNA test.

Treatments include surgery (removal of polyps before they become cancerous), chemotherapy, radiation theraphy, and targeted dryg therapy. While no alternative treatment has been proven to cure bowel cancer, certain techniques can help relieve distreess from the disease, including yoga, music therapy and relaxation exercises.

The Medicard Lifestyle Center offers endoscopy and other quality medical services. Visit its website at http://medicardphils.com for more information.
